Antonieta Mercado is a Communication and Media Scholar, Professor and Artist.
Antonieta Mercado. Comunicóloga, Artista y Bordadora de Sueños.
I am a professor of communication and social justice at the University of San Diego Department of Communication, and the Director of the Program in Latin American Studies. I received the 2021 Freire and hooks Decolonial Pedagogy award from the Center for Education Excellence for my commitment to pedagogies and content on racial justice and BIPOC scholarship. I also received the 2016 Community Engagement Award from the Mulvaney Center for Community Awareness and Social Action at the University of San Diego.
I am interested in creating small spaces of creativity, resistance and decolonial resurgence. Living in a system that seems to overwhelm hope and possibilities, cultivating small and slow spaces for solidarity and hope seem the only way to move forward.
I have a Ph D in Communication from the University of California, San Diego, a Master’s at the School of Communication in San Diego State University, and a Bachelor degree in Political Science from the Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales at UNAM, Mexico. I was born in Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, in the periphery of Mexico City, and currently live in the US/Mexico border, in the ancestral territory of the Kumeyaay nation.
